Charlotte Street sits at the seam of Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury, a stretch of London where media offices, independent restaurants, and Georgian facades have long coexisted in a state of creative restlessness. The Charlotte Street Hotel occupies a converted 1790s building on this very road, its entrance unassuming from the pavement but opening into interiors that announce themselves immediately. Kit Kemp's design signature is everywhere: vivid fabrics, original artwork, handpicked antiques, and a fearless approach to pattern and colour that turns each room into something closer to a gallery than a hotel corridor. It is a Firmdale property through and through, which means the details are exacting but the atmosphere never stiffens.
Fifty-two rooms and suites are spread across the building, each one individually designed with Kemp's characteristic mix of English eclecticism and modern comfort. Expect bold textiles, granite and oak bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows on the upper floors, and a layered sense of domesticity that feels more like staying in a very well-appointed London flat than a hotel. Some suites include sitting rooms and dining areas generous enough for entertaining. Throughout, the artwork rotates and surprises, with pieces from the Bloomsbury Group and contemporary British artists lending each space its own quiet narrative.
Oscar Restaurant and Bar anchors the ground floor, serving modern European cuisine in a room defined by rich wood panelling and statement art. It draws a loyal neighbourhood crowd alongside hotel guests, particularly for weekend brunch and pre-theatre dinners. The bar itself is a destination in its own right, intimate and warmly lit, well suited to an early evening cocktail or a late conversation over a glass of something good. Downstairs, the hotel's private screening room offers weekend film club events complete with supper, a signature Firmdale touch that reinforces the sense of a members' club without the membership. A small, well-equipped gym is available for guests, and the Drawing Room serves as a bright, art-filled lounge for afternoon tea or quieter moments during the day.
The surrounding neighbourhood rewards exploration on foot. Charlotte Street itself is one of London's most concentrated dining corridors, while the British Museum, Soho's theatres, and the shops of Oxford Street all sit within a short walk. Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street stations place the rest of the city within easy reach, but many guests find they rarely need to venture far. The Charlotte Street Hotel creates the kind of stay where London feels both central and contained, where the energy of the city is always just outside the door but the interiors offer a counterpoint of bold warmth and considered comfort that lingers well after checkout.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular kind of London hotel that feels less like accommodation and more like stepping into someone's exceptionally well-curated sitting room — and Charlotte Street Hotel is exactly that. The wood-panelled library with its crackling fire, the period fireplaces standing alongside modern art, early 20th-century pieces lining the rooms — it all reads like a place assembled by someone who genuinely loves both history and the present tense. It sits just minutes from Soho's restless energy, yet inside, the mood shifts entirely: unhurried, textured, quietly confident. The private screening room is an unexpectedly personal touch that says something about the hotel's character — it's not chasing grandeur, it's chasing pleasure. You leave feeling like you discovered a corner of London that belongs to you.

I can't say enough about the staff at the Charlotte Street Hotel. They were friendly and attentive. They managed to check me in early after my transatlantic flight. They also stayed on top of getting my prescription glasses back from the driver from the airport before my stay ended. The interior design of the hotel was charming and unforgettable.

Been before and will "be" again I love the location. Handy for west end and theatres but not much traffic and many top restaurants within a few minutes (or seconds!)
