The approach alone tells you something has shifted. A quiet residential road climbs above Bantry Bay, the Atlantic stretching wide and impossibly blue below, and then a pair of gates opens onto Ellerman House. The 1912 Edwardian mansion sits on one and a half acres of terraced gardens that cascade toward the sea, its façade a study in Cape colonial grandeur softened by decades of wisteria, indigenous landscaping, and contemporary art that lives as comfortably outdoors as it does within. This is not a conventional hotel. With just thirteen rooms and suites across the main house and two private villas, it operates more like a patrician residence that has simply agreed to welcome a small number of guests at a time.
Interiors carry the atmosphere of a private collector's home rather than a curated hospitality space. The contemporary South African art collection is museum-caliber, hung throughout lounges, hallways, and bedrooms with the kind of density that rewards slow looking. Downstairs, the wine gallery houses one of the country's most significant collections, available for private tastings that move through the Cape Winelands without ever leaving the property. Each room and suite in the main house is individually appointed, oriented toward the ocean or the gardens, furnished with antiques alongside modern South African design. The two private villas, Ellerman House Villa One and Villa Two, extend the estate's footprint with dedicated staff, private pools, full kitchens, and entertaining spaces suited to families or groups seeking total seclusion within the property's grounds.
Dining at Ellerman House unfolds with the rhythm of a private home. Meals are served in the elegant main dining room or al fresco on the terrace overlooking the Atlantic, with menus shaped by seasonal Cape ingredients and an emphasis on South African wine pairings drawn from the estate's own cellar. There is no formal restaurant name or public booking. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner are simply part of the day, prepared for guests as if by a personal chef. The spa, tucked into the lower levels of the property, offers a focused menu of treatments. The heated infinity pool sits at the garden's edge with uninterrupted views across the ocean toward Robben Island and the horizon beyond. For those drawn to the surrounding landscape, the property arranges excursions to the Cape Winelands, Table Mountain, and the Cape Peninsula, though many guests find little reason to leave.
Bantry Bay occupies a sheltered stretch of the Atlantic Seaboard, positioned between the cosmopolitan energy of the V&A Waterfront and the beach culture of Clifton and Camps Bay. Ellerman House sits above it all, elevated and apart, connected to Cape Town's cultural life but removed from its pace. The estate's gardens alone, designed with indigenous fynbos and subtropical plantings that attract sunbirds and frame the ocean in every direction, make a compelling case for stillness. What lingers after a stay here is the rare sense of having been a guest in someone's extraordinary home, one where the art on the walls, the wine in the cellar, and the view from every window all belong to the same deeply personal story.

What we love about this stay
Ellerman House feels less like a hotel and more like a private residence that happens to have impeccable taste — the kind of place where original South African art hangs in your room alongside bespoke furnishings, and neither feels like it's trying to impress you. Perched in Bantry Bay with the Atlantic stretching out ahead, it has the quiet confidence of a property that doesn't need to compete with Cape Town's flashier addresses. The art gallery and wine cellar aren't add-ons; they feel like extensions of a genuine cultural curiosity, a house that takes South Africa's creative and viticultural heritage seriously. Even the kitchen draws on Cape Malay traditions with a sense of storytelling rather than spectacle. It's the kind of stay that rewards you for slowing down and noticing — a place where the details accumulate into something you carry with you long after.

After my recent stay at Ellerman House I can safely state that this was one of the best hotel stays I have ever experienced. From the moment I arrived the service was impeccable. My spacious and comfortable room (#8) was super quiet, something that is hugely important to me. The service and attention to detail was second to none. The pantry with a variety of (healthy) snacks and sweets is just too tempting. The immaculate gardens with beautiful local fynbos plants and flowers, as well as the large pool, offer the ultimate relaxing ambiance after a busy day. And let's not forget the art collection. Do visit the art gallery! Thank you to the entire team at Ellerman House for a wonderful, perfect stay.
