The building announces itself before you enter. Gorgeous George occupies a striking address on St George's Mall in Cape Town's city center, its exterior a conversation between heritage architecture and contemporary design. Step inside and the lobby unfolds with confident geometry, terrazzo floors, brass details, and an atmosphere that feels more like a friend's impeccably curated apartment than a hotel. Designed by Liam Mooney Studio and developed under the Design Hotels umbrella, the property channels a mid-century sensibility filtered through a distinctly South African lens, where bold color, pattern, and local craft are woven into every surface.
The 32 rooms range from compact to spacious, each one individually considered rather than templated. Expect custom furniture, rich textiles, curated art, and a palette that shifts between moody greens, warm terracottas, and deep blues. Bathrooms feature locally sourced amenities and thoughtful fixtures. The rooms feel intentional without being precious, the kind of spaces where you leave your shoes off and stay longer than planned.
Gigi Rooftop Bar is the property's social anchor, perched above the city with panoramic views stretching from Table Mountain to the harbor. The cocktail program leans creative and seasonal, and the food menu draws from local producers with a Mediterranean inflection. It is the kind of rooftop that feels genuinely atmospheric rather than performative, as comfortable for a late-morning coffee as it is for sundowners. Downstairs, the ground-floor restaurant and bar keeps things grounded with a menu built around South African ingredients and a wine list that favors the Western Cape's smaller producers.
Cape Town's creative energy surrounds the property on every side. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art African Art, the V&A Waterfront, and the galleries and studios of Woodstock are all within easy reach. The hotel sits on one of the city's central pedestrian streets, placing guests in the thick of the downtown rhythm without the noise of the busier thoroughfares. The Company's Garden, Parliament, and the Bo-Kaap neighborhood are close enough for a walk.
Gorgeous George leaves behind the feeling of a city hotel that actually understands its city. It does not borrow from international design templates or chase trends already fading elsewhere. The rooms are warm. The rooftop is magnetic. The details are specific. You leave remembering the color of the tiles, the weight of the glassware, the light shifting across Table Mountain from your seat at the bar.

What we love about this stay
Gorgeous George feels like it was designed by someone who actually lives in Cape Town and wanted you to understand why. The interiors lean contemporary but carry local artfulness in their details — it's a place with a clear design point of view rather than a generic boutique formula. Rooms are flooded with natural light through generous windows, framing the cityscape in ways that make you pause mid-conversation. The rooftop terrace is where the property's personality really lands: it sits above the hum of the city, offering a panoramic perch that feels both social and contemplative depending on the hour. The restaurant's fusion of international and South African flavors speaks to the same spirit — a hotel that doesn't just sit in Cape Town but actively engages with it. It's the kind of stay that quietly shifts your relationship with a city.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Gorgeous George and the rooftop bar was great. Breakfast was very good.

Quirky, charming with a delightful attitude and design ethos stirred in for good measure. The Gorgeous George is delightful with lashings of attitude and exuberance and wonderful design everywhere you look. That also pretty much summed up the team who looked after our every whim seamlessly. The rooftop restaurant and bar (gigi) are unignorable and it was quite hard to drag ourselves away. The pedestrian street, St George's Mall is really lovely to take a stroll if you need a stretch.
