The lobby announces it immediately: soaring ceilings, restored art deco detailing, and the unmistakable gravity of a building that once held the weight of Western Canada's financial ambitions. EXchange Hotel Vancouver occupies the former Vancouver Stock Exchange tower, a 1929 landmark in the heart of the city's downtown core. The conversion from trading floor to boutique hotel preserves the building's architectural drama while layering in a contemporary design sensibility that feels considered rather than contrived. Original terrazzo floors, ornamental plasterwork, and geometric motifs remain intact, grounding every corridor and common space in a sense of provenance that no new build can replicate.
The hotel's 202 rooms span a range of categories, from compact studios to more generous suites, each designed with a restrained palette that lets the building's character lead. Furnishings are modern and clean-lined, balancing the heritage architecture without competing with it. Large windows frame views of the downtown skyline, the North Shore mountains, or the city streets below, depending on your floor and orientation. Thoughtful touches throughout the rooms reflect a hotel that understands what a well-traveled guest actually needs rather than what looks impressive in a rendering.
Downstairs, the hotel's food and beverage program anchors the social life of the property. Hydra, the on-site restaurant and bar, draws from Mediterranean-influenced cuisine and offers a gathering space that feels as welcoming to hotel guests as it does to locals. The bar program leans into craft cocktails and a carefully selected wine list, making it a natural stop before or after dinner. For morning rituals, coffee and lighter fare set the tone without ceremony. The lobby itself functions as a living room of sorts, its period details providing a backdrop for quieter moments between the city's offerings.
Location is among the hotel's strongest assets. Situated on Howe Street in the financial district, EXchange places you within walking distance of the Vancouver Art Gallery, Robson Street shopping, Gastown's cobblestoned restaurant scene, and the waterfront. The convention center, cruise ship terminal, and Stanley Park are all close at hand, making this a base that rewards exploration in every direction. The SkyTrain is moments away for those looking to venture further into the city's sprawling network of neighborhoods.
What lingers is the particular pleasure of staying inside a building with genuine history, one whose bones carry a narrative far richer than any design concept could fabricate. EXchange Hotel Vancouver offers something increasingly rare in modern hospitality: a sense of place that was earned, not manufactured, and a stay that feels rooted in the very story of its city.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular shift that happens when you walk into the EXchange — Vancouver's downtown energy doesn't disappear, it just gets quieter, more composed. The lobby sets a tone that's urban but unhurried, where fresh flowers and considered design details signal a place that takes atmosphere seriously without announcing it. Rooms feel like they belong to the city, those large windows pulling the skyline in close, making the view feel less like a backdrop and more like company. Hydra Estiatorio brings genuine personality to the dining experience — Mediterranean flavors through a Greek lens, served in a space that hums with cosmopolitan warmth rather than formality. What stays with you is the hotel's proximity to everything that makes Vancouver feel alive — Gastown's cobblestones, the Seawall, the waterfront — paired with interiors that give you a real reason to come back.

Loved our two night stay at Exchange Hotel. Comfortable room, attentive staff, and old world vibe. We liked the decorative nods to the building’s former purpose (Vancouver Stock Exchange). Very close to Waterfront station (Sky Train). Would return!

We stayed one night at the Exchange hotel on our way home from Whistler. The location is perfect as everything was walkable distance including shopping, Canada place and Stanley park. Our room was well appointed, clean and spacious enough for our family of 5 to sleep comfortably. The beds were very, very comfortable (a must for us!) and the shower spacious. We had breakfast at Hydra the next morning which was excellent and good value for the quality and quantity, decent coffee too! However the standout were the staff. Front desk, Hydra wait staff and cleaners were all so helpful, clear, warm and friendly. The concierge/valets went above and beyond to welcome us, help us with our luggage (including ski bags) and booked us a Van taxi to get us to the airport the next day. By the time we came out the door they had packed our luggage into the taxi, which ended up being very reasonably priced, and not much more than 5 skytrain tickets. I would highly recommend the Exchange hotel.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay at the Exchange Hotel on a recent visit to the big city to attend the Vancouver boat show. The staff were very welcoming and well above and beyond. Check in was easy, the room was exceptionally quiet, underground parking (extra fee) was very secure and well lit, and the location was perfect. We will definitely choose to come back to this beautiful hotel.
