There is a particular kind of hotel that feels less like a brand and more like a home that someone loved into existence. Wedgewood Hotel & Spa is that kind of place. Set on a tree-lined street in the center of Vancouver, directly across from the courthouse gardens and steps from the cultural pulse of Robson Square, the property carries a warmth that is unmistakably personal. Founded and still owned by Eleni Skalbania, the hotel has been shaped over decades by a single, unwavering point of view. The lobby is rich with original artwork, fresh flowers, antique furnishings, and deep colors that feel collected rather than curated. With just 83 rooms and suites, the scale is deliberately intimate, and the atmosphere reflects it.
Accommodations are appointed with a classic European sensibility. Rooms feature balconies, fireplaces, luxury linens, and marble bathrooms, with penthouse suites offering expanded living spaces and sweeping views over the city and surrounding mountains. The design throughout leans traditional, with dark woods, upholstered headboards, and rich fabrics that give each room a sense of enclosure and quiet comfort. There is nothing minimal or austere here. The hotel's character comes from its insistence on texture, detail, and a kind of residential elegance that resists the sleekness of newer boutique properties.
Backhus, the hotel's restaurant, anchors the ground floor with a menu rooted in contemporary cooking that draws on local ingredients and Pacific Northwest sensibility. The space doubles as a gathering point for guests and locals alike, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch in a setting that feels both polished and approachable. Just off the lobby, the bar provides a darker, more intimate counterpoint, with cocktails and evening service that give the hotel a genuine social life after dark. Below, the Wedgewood Spa offers a compact but thoughtful menu of treatments, including facials, massage, body wraps, and nail services, providing a retreat within the retreat. The spa's scale mirrors the hotel itself: small, personal, and attentive.
The location is central to the experience. Situated along Hornby Street in Vancouver's downtown core, the hotel sits within easy reach of the Vancouver Art Gallery, the shops along Robson Street, the seawall, Stanley Park, and the Granville Island market. The neighborhood is walkable, culturally rich, and vibrant in a way that makes stepping outside feel like a natural extension of the stay. What distinguishes Wedgewood Hotel & Spa from its surroundings is its refusal to follow trends. The property remains steadfastly itself, a place where service is genuinely personal, where returning guests are remembered, and where the details reflect not a committee's decision but a single person's taste. It is the kind of hotel that earns loyalty not through spectacle, but through consistency and care.

What we love about this stay
There's something disarming about a hotel that feels genuinely intimate at 83 rooms in the middle of a city like Vancouver. The Wedgewood carries itself with the quiet confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is — not a scene, not a statement, but a deeply considered retreat where elegance reads as personal rather than performed. It's the kind of property where the restaurant, Bacchus, doubles as the social heart of the stay, shifting from a fine dining room to a lounge with a fireplace that actually gets used, not just admired. You sense an owner's hand here, not a brand committee. The proximity to everything — galleries, Stanley Park — only sharpens the contrast when you step back inside and the city genuinely recedes. It stays with you as a feeling more than a list of things you did.

If the rate is right it is my favourite hotel to stay at in Vancouver. In fact it is one of my favourites in North America.

Our room overlooked Robson Square and had a lovely balcony where we sat and enjoyed the evening lights and morning quiet. The service was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. Room was probably the cleanest we've ever had!

It was wonderful to spend a night in luxury at the end of a two-week trip/cruise to Alaska. My mother even commented she felt "like a rock star." I'd love to return to Vancouver for a longer stay and would definitely plan to stay again at the Wedgewood.
