A John Nash Regency façade gives little away. Step through the entrance of Haymarket Hotel and the shift is immediate: saturated color, fearless pattern, and a confidence in design that treats every corridor, every landing, every tucked-away sitting area as an opportunity to delight. This is a Firmdale hotel, which means the interiors bear the unmistakable signature of Kit Kemp, whose eye for textile, proportion, and wit has shaped one of London's most recognizable hospitality aesthetics. The fifty rooms and suites vary in scale and personality, each dressed in hand-picked fabrics, original artwork, and furnishings that feel collected rather than curated. No two are alike. Floor-to-ceiling windows in many of the rooms frame views over the surrounding streets of St James's, and the effect throughout is one of living inside a beautifully composed, deeply personal London residence.
The hotel's ground-floor restaurant, Brumus, sets a lively tone through the day, moving from morning coffee and breakfast through lunch, afternoon tea, and evening dining in a space animated by bold upholstery and sculptural light. The menu leans British and seasonal, and the bar adjacent offers cocktails and wine in an atmosphere that draws both hotel guests and neighborhood regulars. Below ground level, an eighteen-meter swimming pool occupies a space that feels unexpectedly grand for central London, its length lined in moody lighting and flanked by a wood-paneled gym. There is also a library, its shelves loaded and its armchairs deep enough to lose an afternoon in, along with a drawing room that serves as an informal gathering point.
Location here is theatrical in every sense. Haymarket Hotel sits just off the Haymarket itself, steps from Theatre Royal Haymarket and within easy reach of Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, and the clubs and galleries of St James's. The Royal Academy is a short walk north, Jermyn Street runs parallel with its haberdashers and perfumers, and the parks of Green Park and St James's Park border the neighborhood to the west and south. This is one of London's most storied and walkable quarters, and the hotel occupies it with the ease of a long-standing resident.
What stays with you after Haymarket Hotel is the sense that every detail was chosen by someone who genuinely enjoys the act of putting a room together. The swimming pool in the basement, the hand-stitched headboard in your suite, the abstract canvas above the mantel in the library: none of it feels prescribed by trend or formula. It feels like personality, expressed with discipline and pleasure in equal measure, in the middle of a city that rewards exactly that kind of conviction.

What we love about this stay
There's a theatrical confidence to the Haymarket that never tips into costume drama — bold contemporary design sits alongside classic British sensibility, and somehow neither flinches. The bespoke artworks, the rooms dressed in palettes that nod to the season's nearby productions, the sense that every surface has been considered without being overthought — it all feels like a place that genuinely enjoys its own personality. Sitting in the heart of London's theatre district, steps from Trafalgar Square, you'd expect the energy outside to overwhelm, but the interior holds its own quiet pulse. The swimming pool, glimmering under mood lighting, feels like a secret the neighborhood doesn't know about. It's a hotel that rewards people who appreciate design conviction and a location that puts you at the center of London without ever making you feel like a tourist.
