There is a particular energy to the streets surrounding Hôtel des Academies et des Arts, a creative pulse that has persisted since the days when Modigliani, Giacometti, and Man Ray made this neighborhood their own. Tucked along the rue de la Grande Chaumière in the heart of Montparnasse, the hotel occupies a stretch of Paris where art academies and ateliers once lined every block. That legacy is not merely referenced here. It is woven into the walls themselves, where original works by artist Jérôme Mesnager and street artist Reso transform corridors, facades, and guest rooms into a living gallery. White silhouettes climb staircases, bold strokes of color animate headboards, and each floor feels like a new chapter in an ongoing dialogue between the hotel and the artistic tradition of its surroundings.
The 20 rooms are intimate in scale but striking in personality. Decorated with murals and original artwork, they balance a contemporary design sensibility with a warmth that keeps the experience from feeling austere. Categories range from cozy singles to more spacious options, each carrying its own artistic composition. Details like wooden floors, clean-lined furnishings, and carefully considered lighting give the rooms a sense of calm against the vibrancy of the artwork. Some look out onto the quiet street below, offering a view of the neighborhood that first attracted generations of painters and sculptors.
Common spaces continue the gallery atmosphere. The ground-floor lounge serves as both a gathering spot and an informal exhibition space, its walls alive with Mesnager's signature figures. Breakfast is served here each morning in a setting that feels more like a friend's well-curated apartment than a hotel dining room. A small bar area offers an aperitif in the evening, a natural pause before heading out into the quartier. The hotel sits just steps from the Jardin du Luxembourg, within easy reach of the cafés of Boulevard du Montparnasse, the Fondation Cartier, and the quiet studios that still operate in the surrounding streets. The Vavin Métro station is moments away, connecting guests to the rest of the city with ease.
Hôtel des Academies et des Arts does not attempt to be everything. It is a 20-room hotel with a clear point of view, one that honors the creative identity of its address without turning it into spectacle. The experience is personal, unhurried, and unmistakably Parisian in its proportions. You leave not with the memory of grandeur, but with the feeling of having briefly belonged to a neighborhood that has always attracted those who see the world a little differently.

What we love about this stay
There's something quietly defiant about a hotel that treats art not as decoration but as architecture for how you feel. Hôtel des Académies et des Arts sits in the 6th District with the confidence of a place that knows its neighborhood — the legacy of ateliers, the proximity to Luxembourg Gardens, the weight of creative history in every surrounding street. Rooms feel less like accommodations and more like personal galleries, each with bespoke artistic details that resist uniformity. The courtyard offers genuine stillness, a rare commodity in central Paris, while a dedicated video art room signals a curatorial sensibility you don't often find at this scale. Downstairs, the scent of Pierre Hermé macaroons from Chez Charlotte sets a tone that's indulgent but never fussy. It's a hotel for people who travel to feel something specific — not grandeur, but intimacy with a city's creative pulse.

Stylish boutique hotel in a quiet street in Montparnasse neighbourhood. Loved our room and all the bespoke design touches and comforts. Great location for cafes, shops, restaurants and access to sights. A stones throw from the lovely Jardin du Luxembourg. For folks travelling by train - an easy walk to Gare Montparnasse. We look forward to our next visit and exploring more of this great neighbourhood.
