The entrance is easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. A discreet doorway on Rue de la Verrerie opens into a world that feels centuries removed from the bustle of the Marais just outside. Hotel Le Grand Mazarin occupies a restored seventeenth-century hôtel particulier in the heart of Paris's fourth arrondissement, its interiors a deliberate collision of old-world opulence and contemporary theatricality. The lobby sets the register immediately: ornamental plasterwork, rich jewel tones, handpainted wallpapers, and an eclectic layering of antique furniture with bold modern flourishes. Every surface feels considered, every corner composed with the confidence of someone who understands that maximalism, done well, is its own form of restraint.
The hotel's 61 rooms and suites carry the same decorative intensity. Expect silk-draped headboards, deep-hued velvets, gilded mirrors, freestanding bathtubs, and a palette that moves between emerald, sapphire, and claret depending on the category. Some rooms look onto the quiet interior courtyard; others offer views across Marais rooftops. The suites expand the stage with generous sitting areas and the kind of architectural details, from carved moldings to original timber beams, that remind you this building has lived several lives before this one.
Downstairs, Boubalé brings the flavors of Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine to the hotel's ground-floor restaurant, a nod to the Marais's deep roots as the historic Jewish quarter of Paris. The menu draws on tradition but presents it with a polished, contemporary eye, and the dining room itself feels warm and convivial, dressed in the same maximalist vocabulary as the rest of the property. For something more intimate, the hotel's cocktail bar offers a darker, moodier register where drinks are served against a backdrop of lacquered walls and low lighting. A hammam and spa tucked within the lower levels provide a place to decompress, with treatment rooms that carry the same decorative richness found throughout the building.
Location is, of course, one of Hotel Le Grand Mazarin's most compelling assets. The Marais remains one of the most walkable and layered neighborhoods in Paris, a dense mosaic of medieval streets, private courtyards, independent galleries, and centuries-old bakeries. The Place des Vosges sits minutes away. The Seine and Île Saint-Louis are an easy stroll south. This is a part of the city where history is not preserved behind glass but lived in daily, and the hotel takes its cues from that energy.
What lingers after a stay here is not a single detail but the cumulative effect of many. The theatricality of the interiors, the warmth of the restaurant, the quiet privacy of the courtyard, the particular pleasure of stepping from a cobblestoned Marais lane into a world this deliberately and lovingly constructed. Hotel Le Grand Mazarin does not attempt subtlety. It commits fully to its vision, and the result is a hotel that feels unmistakably, exuberantly Parisian.

What we love about this stay
What strikes you first is the threshold — one moment you're in the thick of Rue de Rivoli's relentless energy, and the next you're somewhere quieter, more considered, where the city recedes into soft background texture. Le Grand Mazarin has that rare quality of feeling like a neighborhood secret despite sitting squarely in the Marais's most connected stretch. The design leans into Parisian elegance without leaning on it too heavily; rooms are restrained, modern, lit generously by tall windows that open onto either the city's hum or a courtyard stillness. Boubalé feels like an extension of that personality — food that's playful enough to surprise but grounded in local instinct. It's the kind of place that suits someone who wants Paris intimately, not performatively, and who values returning to something calm after a long day on foot.

This is a wonderful hotel in the Marais section of Paris. The staff are absolutely fantastic and the rooms are beautiful. Though the property is on a busy side street, the hotel seems very quiet. There’s an heated pool and sauna in the basement that is quite rare in Parisian hotels. Excellent shopping is close by with the BHV department store across the street and the metro station just a few steps away. Have to give a shout out too to the staff in the attached bar downstairs (Julien, Simon…)as they made our stay even more fun!
