There is a particular quality to stepping off a Midtown Manhattan sidewalk and into a lobby that feels nothing like Midtown Manhattan. The Refinery Hotel occupies a converted 1912 millinery building on West 38th Street, its bones still visible in exposed brick walls, original hardwood floors, and steel-framed windows that frame the vertical city beyond. The architecture announces itself without performing. Industrial heritage meets a considered contemporary eye, and the effect is one of texture and warmth rather than spectacle.
The hotel's 197 rooms and suites carry forward the building's raw character while delivering a polished sense of comfort. Lofted ceilings, period-inspired furnishings, and a muted palette of warm neutrals create spaces that feel both grounded and generous. Custom wallpapers, leather accents, and brass fixtures bring a tailored quality to each room, while oversized windows ensure the city's restless energy is always present as backdrop. Suites expand the experience with separate living areas, and select accommodations offer striking views across the Midtown skyline.
Parker & Quinn, the hotel's ground-floor restaurant and bar, serves as a neighborhood anchor in its own right. The brasserie-style space channels the building's industrial past with dark woods, tufted banquettes, and warm amber lighting, offering a menu of American comfort fare that holds its own against the surrounding density of Midtown dining. Above it all, the Refinery Rooftop draws guests and locals alike to one of Midtown's most atmospheric open-air perches. The rooftop lounge sits beneath the building's original water tower, delivering panoramic views of the Empire State Building and the surrounding skyline alongside craft cocktails and seasonal small plates. On a clear evening, it becomes one of those rare New York spaces where conversation slows and the city feels almost manageable.
The Refinery Hotel sits in the heart of the Garment District, within walking distance of Times Square, Bryant Park, Herald Square, and Penn Station. Its location places guests at the crossroads of Midtown's cultural, commercial, and culinary energy while offering a retreat that feels distinctly apart from the neighborhood's bustle. The building's century-old industrial heritage provides a counterpoint to the glass towers surrounding it, a reminder that New York's most compelling spaces are often the ones that carry their history forward. You leave the Refinery with the sense that some of this city's finest moments happen not in the newest rooms, but in the ones that remember what they once were.

What we love about this stay
What strikes you first is the contrast — the way Manhattan's relentless energy simply drops away the moment you cross the threshold. The Refinery doesn't fight the city; it absorbs it and offers back something quieter, more considered. There's a chic restraint to the rooms that feels deliberate rather than minimal, the kind of place where Frette sheets and a low evening glow from the television somehow make the whole island feel less urgent. Downstairs, Parker and Quinn channels the city's boldness into American cooking with real personality, while upstairs, the rooftop terrace gives you something rare — a shift in altitude that genuinely reframes your relationship with the skyline. It's a hotel for people who love New York deeply but need somewhere that lets them set their own tempo within it.

Great room and great service. Very accommodating and helpful staff. The 3 restaurant/bars are all great and offer different vibes. I thought the value was great for what we paid (we did the breakfast voucher that worked great). The location felt very safe and was walkable to some major tourist/non-tourist stuff. Everything was kept very clean.

We always have such a wonderful time staying at the Refinery in NYC. From the moment you walk through the doors in the lobby, the warmth and smell is so comforting and welcoming. Rooms are always clean. Staff is wonderful! The hotel is very walkable to a lot of NYC hotspots.

very noisy room. even at the 11th floor you feel like on the street. the windows do not isolate from the overall noise of NY. A part of that the room size is quite good , furniture are old and we are far away from a 5 stars hotel
