The Johnston Building has anchored the corner of Broadway and 28th Street since 1903, its Beaux-Arts facade a relic of Manhattan's original commercial grandeur. Step inside The Ned NoMad and that century-old architecture becomes something else entirely: a hotel that treats its heritage not as a museum piece but as a living stage. The lobby pulses with the energy of a European grand café, its original marble columns and ornamental plasterwork now sharing space with richly upholstered furnishings, jewel-toned palettes, and a design language that borrows freely from the building's Edwardian bones. There is nothing tentative about the atmosphere here. It announces itself with confidence, warmth, and just enough theatrical flair to feel unmistakably New York.
The hotel's 167 rooms range from cozy Crash Pads to sprawling suites, each dressed in a palette of deep greens, burgundies, and aged leather that nods to the building's original era without succumbing to nostalgia. Expect handsome headboards, vintage-inspired brass fixtures, and marble-clad bathrooms that feel generous even in the more compact categories. Larger suites open up to sitting areas with velvet sofas and curated bookshelves, and some of the top-floor accommodations offer views across the Flatiron District's rooftops. Throughout, the interiors balance period character with genuine comfort, the kind of rooms where you settle in rather than simply sleep.
Dining and drinking weave through the property with the rhythm of a well-run members' club. The ground-floor restaurant, Cecconi's, serves Italian fare amid the building's soaring original ceilings, a space that feels equally suited to a weeknight pasta and a lingering Saturday lunch. Upstairs, the rooftop offers one of Midtown South's more compelling perches, with open-air seating, seasonal cocktails, and a skyline panorama that stretches from the Empire State Building to the towers of Hudson Yards. The Magic Room, a speakeasy-style bar tucked within the hotel, provides a more intimate counterpoint for late-night drinks. For guests seeking a private gym or grooming services, the property extends into wellness and lifestyle programming that reflects its dual identity as both hotel and social hub.
NoMad itself has become one of Manhattan's most compelling neighborhoods, its blocks lined with independent restaurants, galleries, and design shops that cluster around the corridor between Madison Square Park and the Flatiron Building. The Ned NoMad sits squarely in this energy, close enough to the park's greenery and the district's creative bustle to feel connected to the city's pulse, yet insulated enough behind its ornate facade to offer genuine reprieve. Whether you spend the morning on the rooftop or the evening at Cecconi's, the property establishes a particular tempo: social, stylish, and unrushed, a place where the grandeur of a century-old building finds its most persuasive modern argument.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular kind of calm that happens when a space takes design seriously enough to make each room feel like its own statement rather than a variation on a theme. Nomad Design House has that quality — bespoke furnishings, art-infused spaces, and a sense that someone with a genuine point of view made deliberate choices about what belongs here. It sits in that sweet NoMad stretch of Manhattan where the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden are close enough to walk to, yet the property itself feels like a deliberate step sideways from the city's relentless pace. What lingers is the contrast: you're unmistakably in the middle of everything, but the rooms hold a stillness that makes the Manhattan skyline outside your window feel almost cinematic, like something you're watching rather than surviving.

This property was great. You feel like a real New Yorker staying here. Obviously you forgo the amentities like a gym or pool, but being a small stair case away from the street in Midtown is awesome. Right next to subway which will get you anywhere and you can always walk! Absolutely loved this!!

We had a great stay! Traveled with two older sons and the suite was perfect! Two separate bedrooms was exactly what we needed...the unit was very clean and had everything we needed. The location was just fine....two subways within a block. We could have used a few more bath and wash towels, but Martin helped us by letting us grab a few from the unoccupied unit downstairs. Check in was so easy and Martin quickly responded to any questions we had. The building is safe and secure....we will definitely book here again!

Property was central, clean and all that we needed. For New York I was surprised about the amount of space we had. Some things needed fixing like the kitchen faucet but that was minimal. We were a family of five and it was more than we needed and the staff was quick to answer my emails and contacted me when we arrived in New York.
