There is a particular stillness to arriving at The Ivy Hotel, a feeling that the city has agreed to hold its breath. Set within a meticulously restored nineteenth-century mansion in Baltimore's historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, the property occupies one of the most architecturally distinguished residential blocks in the mid-Atlantic. Original moldings, carved marble fireplaces, and grand staircases remain intact, layered with contemporary furnishings and a level of personal attention that feels less like a hotel and more like a private residence you happen to have the keys to. With just 18 rooms and suites, the scale is deliberately intimate, each space individually appointed with period details, fine linens, and curated art that reflects the building's heritage without becoming a museum piece.
Much of daily life here revolves around Magdalena, the hotel's acclaimed restaurant, where seasonal menus draw from the Chesapeake region's deep culinary traditions. The dining room itself is a quietly dramatic space, warm-toned and candlelit in the evenings, with a sophistication that matches the kitchen's ambition. Beyond dinner, guests gather in the wood-paneled library bar for cocktails or settle into the drawing room with afternoon tea, a ritual the hotel executes with genuine care rather than mere ceremony. A private courtyard garden offers a rare pocket of green in the heart of the city, enclosed by brick walls and old-growth trees that make it easy to forget how close you are to the cultural corridor just outside.
The Ivy's spa occupies the lower level and provides a focused menu of treatments rooted in relaxation rather than spectacle. There is a steam room, a well-equipped fitness space, and a staff that seems to understand the difference between pampering and actual rest. Throughout the property, a dedicated butler service attends to each guest, managing everything from unpacking to restaurant reservations to the small, unscripted requests that define a truly personal stay. It is a model of hospitality that rewards returning visitors, where the staff remembers not just your name but your preferences.
Mount Vernon itself is one of Baltimore's most walkable and culturally rich neighborhoods. The Washington Monument, the Walters Art Museum, and the Peabody Library all sit within a short stroll, lending the area a sense of civic grandeur that few American neighborhoods still possess. The Ivy Hotel belongs to this landscape in a way that feels earned rather than imposed. It does not announce itself from the street. It simply waits behind its iron gate, confident that those who find it will understand what makes it singular: a scale of hospitality that treats discretion as its highest luxury and every guest as though the house was opened for them alone.

What we love about this stay
What strikes you first is the intimacy of scale — just 18 rooms in a property that feels less like a hotel and more like a private residence someone filled with things they actually care about. The fireplaces in the rooms, the bespoke furnishings, the local art lining the walls — none of it reads as decorative afterthought. It reads as conviction. The Ivy sits in the middle of Baltimore's cultural fabric, close enough to theaters and galleries that the city feels woven into the stay rather than something you commute to. Magdalena, the on-site bistro, leans into that sense of place too, treating local ingredients with a kind of quiet seriousness. It's the sort of property where the smallness is the luxury — where being known, not just accommodated, is the whole point.

Live like a Lord in your own Manor House Did you ever want to stay in a gilded age mansion, and believe it was your own? Well, The IVY is just the place for you! Wonderful architecture and the ambiance is superb. Come and enjoy the champagne upon arrival in the fire place room, filled with exquisite plants and a touch of African culture..then waltz down the hall way to a gorgeous little room with enormous paintings and a libation station everyone will enjoy. There is wine, bourbon, gin, and fix your own is the order of the day...then you can relax and have tea in the large and sophisticated living room complete with murals of a cosmopolitan nature...then grab an exquisite art book, in the library area, hit the couch and enjoy your drink. You can have a great game of pool in the drawing room and don't forget to enjoy the wonderful art work and gorgeous antiques along with special treasures displayed perfectly. Each resident room is a treasure, from curtains to bedding, to soothing baths and complementary wine and cheese, you will feel like a Lord of you own manor. If you feel like hitting the town, no worries you've got your own driver. Magdalena, the restaurant, is one of the best in the city. Finally, the staff is so accommodating that you begin to feel like family before your stay is over...as I was told, that is the goal to make The IVY your second home away from home. Just give it a try and I think you will agree with me that this is a definite place to visit again and again in your travels.

Love the Ivy Hotel. The experience was fantastic- starting at the valet (where the valet knew my name on arrival) to being greeted with champagne as soon as we arrived to the thoughtfulness and attention to detail (they remembered our food allergies from last time) to the decor to room service and the exquisite fare to the complimentary shuttle service to …. Well I could go on and will summarize- Favorite hotel experience! I felt seen and honored as a guest.

I treated myself (third visit) and my sister (second visit) to a luxurious and relaxing sister-cation at the Ivy Hotel. Anytime we come here, all our stress and anxiety melt away. I am always impressed with the superb level of attention to detail and genuine warmth that the staff exhibit. They also strive to create personalized experiences for each guest. The hotel offers complimentary car service within a 3 mile radius, cocktail amenities from 12 noon to 12 midnight, a complimentary array of drinks and snacks in each room among other perks...and the homemade honey butter...don't even get me started...the staff was so kind and sent us home with a complimentary jar. The staff are so lovely, from James to Anthony to Kelvin...you are in absolutely great hands. The rooms are all unique and comfortable, and the deep soaking tubs are fabulous. This is our new favorite annual oasis escape.
