The Longfellow stands on Congress Street in Portland's West End, a neighborhood of brick sidewalks, independent galleries, and 19th-century architecture that has aged with uncommon grace. The building itself carries a quiet authority, its restoration honoring the bones of a structure tied to one of America's most celebrated poets while introducing a design sensibility that feels distinctly contemporary. You notice it immediately upon entering: the interplay of historic character and modern restraint, a property that respects its past without performing it.
The hotel's 42 guest rooms are designed with a warm, residential quality that favors clean lines, natural materials, and a palette drawn from the Maine coast. Rooms range from intimate studios to more expansive suites, each appointed with curated furnishings, plush bedding, and thoughtful details that reward a slower pace. Common spaces throughout the property encourage lingering, whether you settle into a reading nook or gather with fellow guests in areas that feel more like a well-loved private home than a conventional hotel lobby. The overall effect is one of belonging rather than spectacle.
Downstairs, Babette serves as the hotel's restaurant, offering a menu rooted in the ingredients and culinary traditions of the region. The space is intimate and warmly lit, a place where dinner feels unhurried and where the kitchen's relationship with local producers shapes each plate. A bar program rounds out the evening with cocktails and a carefully edited wine list, giving guests little reason to venture far after dark. For mornings, coffee and lighter fare provide a grounding start before stepping out into the city.
Portland's West End places you within walking distance of the Arts District, the Old Port's waterfront restaurants and shops, and some of New England's most compelling independent food culture. The city has earned its reputation as a destination where the creative and culinary communities overlap in unexpected ways, and The Longfellow's location lets you move through it all on foot. Ferries to the Casco Bay islands, the Portland Museum of Art, and a constellation of bakeries, wine bars, and chef-driven restaurants are all close at hand.
What stays with you about this hotel is not any single grand gesture but the accumulation of considered choices. The Longfellow operates with a confidence that lets Portland itself remain the protagonist, offering you a place to return to at the end of the day that feels genuinely worth returning to. It is a hotel that understands the difference between luxury and care, and chooses the latter every time.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular tension here that works — the Atlantic just beyond reach, Portland's restless creative energy right at the doorstep, and then this interior world of dark woods and soothing neutrals that feels like someone actually thought about what calm looks like rather than just decorating around the idea of it. The Longfellow sits in that sweet spot where city and coast blur together, and you feel it most through those expansive windows, Casco Bay on one side, Portland's skyline shifting on the other. It's a hotel for people who want to be in the thick of a city's food and art scene but need a place that doesn't compete with it. Grab one of the complimentary bikes and you'll understand the scale of Portland — intimate enough to stumble onto something good, big enough to surprise you. What lingers is the sense that the hotel knows exactly what it is: a well-placed, quietly confident home base in a city that rewards curiosity.

Nice hotel with good service, but way too overpriced. Good location. The shuttle service to and from old town was very convenient.
