There is a certain kind of New York building that holds its ground so quietly it becomes the center of gravity for everything around it. The Mercer occupies a Romanesque Revival landmark at the corner of Prince and Mercer Streets, its red-brick facade and arched windows as much a part of SoHo's visual identity as the cast-iron buildings that line the surrounding blocks. Designed by Christian Liaigre, the interiors trade the ornate gestures of uptown hospitality for something cooler, more considered. Exposed brick walls, long oak surfaces, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and generous loft proportions give every space the feeling of a private residence rather than a hotel lobby. The reception is tucked away deliberately, replaced by a living-room-like lounge where guests settle in as though they already belong.

The 75 guest rooms and suites carry Liaigre's vision from the public spaces into private ones. Ceilings stretch high above wide-plank floors. Bathtubs are set against exposed brick. Custom furnishings in dark wood and neutral tones keep the rooms grounded, uncluttered, and deeply comfortable. Studios, lofts, and multi-room suites vary in scale, but all share that unmistakable quality of space and light that defines the best SoHo lofts. Some of the larger suites offer separate living areas, dining tables, and full kitchens, reinforcing the sense that The Mercer was designed not just for overnight guests but for those who want to live in New York on their own terms.

The Mercer Kitchen, located below the lobby, has been a neighborhood institution since chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten opened it alongside the hotel. The subterranean dining room, with its raw concrete columns and industrial edges, serves a menu that moves between French technique and downtown informality. It remains one of those rare hotel restaurants that locals claim as their own. Beyond the restaurant, the hotel offers a 24-hour concierge and room service, a library lounge for quiet afternoons, and the kind of discreet, anticipatory service that asks very little of its guests while delivering precisely what they need.

SoHo unfolds in every direction from the front door. The galleries, boutiques, and cobblestone streets that made this neighborhood the creative capital of downtown Manhattan are steps away. Nolita, Chinatown, and the West Village sit within easy walking distance, placing The Mercer at the intersection of art, food, fashion, and streetlife without ever having to announce it. This is a hotel that understood, from its opening, that the most compelling luxury in New York is not spectacle but proximity, space, and the freedom to disappear into the city at your own pace.

What we love about this stay

There's something almost counterintuitive about a hotel with only seven rooms in the middle of Manhattan — it reshapes your relationship with the city entirely. The Mercer doesn't compete with SoHo's energy; it absorbs it and then quietly sets it aside. The design is muted, deliberately restrained, the kind of minimalism that feels like a deep exhale rather than a style statement. You sense it immediately in the lobby's soft lighting, in the way the rooms wrap around you with plush textures and toned-down palettes. It's a place that suits people who already know New York well enough to want a private version of it. Sartiano's downstairs adds just the right amount of warmth and sociability when you want it, without the hotel ever losing its essential hush.
