There are buildings in Greenwich Village that hold more history in their lobbies than most cities hold in their museums. The Marlton Hotel is one of them. Built in 1900 as a residential hotel, the property at 5 West Eighth Street has housed Beat poets, French literary icons, and a revolving cast of downtown characters whose stories still cling to the marble and millwork. Today, the Marlton operates as an intimate boutique hotel with 107 rooms, its interiors reimagined with a Parisian sensibility that feels entirely at home on this particular stretch of Lower Manhattan. The lobby is its own scene: herringbone floors, a working marble fireplace, velvet seating, brass fixtures, and an espresso bar that draws guests and neighbors alike into a space designed as much for lingering as for passing through.
Rooms are deliberately compact, a reflection of both the building's original architecture and a design philosophy rooted in European proportion rather than American sprawl. Expect custom wallpapers, writing desks, brass hardware, and bathrooms finished in Carrara marble. The aesthetic is layered and literary, rich with texture and reference without ever feeling overwrought. Larger suites offer more breathing room, but even the smallest quarters feel considered, with careful attention to lighting, storage, and the quality of linens and fixtures. The effect is something closer to a well-appointed Parisian pied-à-terre than a conventional hotel room.
Margaux, the hotel's ground-floor restaurant, serves French-Mediterranean cuisine in a setting of dark wood, candlelight, and an atmosphere that shifts gracefully from morning coffee to late-evening wine. The space opens onto Eighth Street in warmer months, connecting the dining room to the sidewalk energy of the Village. Upstairs, the lobby espresso bar remains a gathering point throughout the day, its marble counter and café seating offering one of the more civilized ways to begin a morning in downtown Manhattan.
The Marlton sits just steps from Fifth Avenue and Washington Square Park, anchored in a neighborhood defined by independent bookshops, jazz clubs, and the kind of streetscape that resists homogeneity. The Village remains one of New York's most walkable and culturally layered quarters, and the hotel's position on West Eighth Street places guests within easy reach of the park's arch, the brownstone-lined blocks of the West Village, and the galleries and restaurants of NoHo. It is a location that rewards wandering over planning.
What stays with you about The Marlton is not its size or its amenities but its atmosphere of intelligent intimacy. It is a hotel that understands the particular pleasure of a small, well-made space in a city that rarely slows down long enough to notice one.

What we love about this stay
The Marlton feels like Greenwich Village distilled into a building — historic without being precious, intimate without feeling small. Brass fixtures and herringbone floors set a tone that's warm and slightly literary, as if the hotel remembers every interesting person who's ever passed through. The rooms are compact in the way that good Village apartments are, with marble bathrooms and plush bedding that make them feel genuinely personal rather than miniaturized. What stays with you is the proximity to Washington Square Park and the way the neighborhood's creative energy — its cafes, galleries, the hum of NYU — seeps right through the front door. It's a place for travelers who want to feel embedded in the city rather than insulated from it, where the line between hotel and neighborhood barely exists.

A perfect little cosy stop in New York. Lovely hotel and always our go-to when visiting New York - cosy, friendly and low-key. The staff can’t do enough to help you. Sadly, someone was smoking in the room next door to us and they moved us to a different floor immediately with no back and forth! So happy to have this place to come and rest in while in New York.

Our stay was lovely and comfortable. We loved it. The hotel was beautiful. We loved all the complimentary snacks in our room. The breakfast being right down stairs in the mooring was also excellent.
