The curve announces itself before anything else. Sweeping, confident, unmistakably mid-century in its ambition, The Watergate Hotel Georgetown occupies one of the most storied addresses in American life and transforms its complicated legacy into something unexpectedly glamorous. Designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti in the 1960s, the building's sinuous facade hugs the Potomac riverfront with a theatricality that feels both of its era and thoroughly renewed. A recent top-to-bottom restoration by Ron Arad and Euro Capital Properties has preserved the architectural drama while introducing interiors that are sleek, witty, and layered with knowing references to the building's infamous past. The whiskey bar's entrance, marked with a nod to room 214, is just one of many details that signal a property unafraid to own its history.
The 336 rooms and suites carry the building's curves into their design, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the Potomac River, the Georgetown waterfront, or the Washington Monument in the distance. Interiors lean into a palette of deep blues, warm metallics, and custom furnishings that feel mid-century in spirit but contemporary in execution. Many suites offer generous living areas with statement lighting and freestanding soaking tubs positioned near the windows. The top-floor penthouse suites deliver panoramic vistas that stretch across the capital's skyline. Throughout, the design walks a deliberate line between gravitas and playfulness, anchored by thoughtful material choices and unexpected pops of color.
Kingbird is the hotel's signature restaurant, a bright and polished dining room offering refined American and continental cuisine with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients. The space opens onto an outdoor terrace overlooking the river, one of the more compelling dining perches along the Georgetown waterfront. For evening drinks, The Next Whisky Bar presents an immersive experience behind a dramatically lit wall of over 2,500 whisky bottles, offering one of the most extensive collections in the city. Top of the Gate, the rooftop lounge, provides sunset cocktails with sweeping views across the Potomac toward Virginia and the monuments, a setting that makes the most of the building's elevated position along the river. A full-service spa offers treatment rooms, relaxation areas, and a fitness center, while the indoor pool maintains the property's curvilinear design language in a serene, light-filled setting.
The location places guests at the intersection of Georgetown and Foggy Bottom, within walking distance of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the tree-lined streets of one of Washington's most historic neighborhoods. Georgetown's boutiques, galleries, and waterfront trails extend just beyond the hotel's doors, while the National Mall and its monuments remain a short drive or pleasant walk away. It is a position that grants proximity to the capital's cultural and political life without being consumed by it.
What lingers after a stay at The Watergate Hotel is the rare sense of a property that has metabolized its own mythology. There is no pretending the name doesn't carry weight. Instead, the hotel meets that weight with design intelligence, genuine hospitality, and a spirit of confident reinvention that makes every corridor, every cocktail, every river-lit evening feel like a page turned forward.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular weight to staying somewhere that carries genuine historical resonance — not curated nostalgia, but the real thing. The Watergate sits right along the Potomac in Georgetown, and that riverside position gives it a quality most D.C. hotels can't touch: a sense of remove from the city's intensity while remaining deeply embedded in it. The design leans sleek and deliberate, with marble bathrooms and polished surfaces offset by plush textures that keep things from feeling cold. What lingers is the rooftop bar, where the skyline becomes less a backdrop and more a companion to the evening. It's a property for travelers who appreciate that history isn't always solemn — sometimes it's a whisky bar and a river view.

We had a delightful 4 day stay to attend Kennedy Center event. Front desk staff and doormen were very helpful and friendly. Room was spotlessly refreshed each day by housekeeping. View was great from room. Our hotel room and bathroom were large and pleasant. Coffee was available every morning in lobby. Hotel pool was delightful. Hotel is a very short walk from Kennedy Center. It was easy to use public transportion to access airport and museums and major sights
