Aman Kyoto

A narrow path through a dense canopy of camphor and hinoki cypress delivers you to a place that feels less discovered than revealed. Aman Kyoto occupies a secret garden spanning over 80 hectares of forested land at the base of the Hidari Daimonji mountain in northern Kyoto, a site originally intended for a private textile museum and cultivated over decades into a landscape of rare beauty. Moss-covered stone pathways wind through the grounds, passing ancient trees, streams, and carefully placed rocks that feel as though they have existed here for centuries. The architecture, designed by Kerry Hill Architects, emerges from this environment rather than imposing upon it, with low-slung pavilions clad in natural materials that defer to the forest at every turn.

Twenty-six guest rooms and two pavilion suites are scattered among the trees, each offering floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the surrounding woodland as a living artwork. Interiors draw on traditional Japanese craft and restraint, with washi paper screens, cypress wood soaking tubs, and a material palette rooted in stone, timber, and muted earth tones. The scale is intimate and deeply private, with each room oriented to feel as though it exists alone within the garden. The two-bedroom pavilions extend this sense of seclusion further, offering generous living spaces and private onsen baths fed by the property's own natural hot spring source.

Dining at Aman Kyoto centers on the Living Pavilion, the resort's social heart, where a central fireplace anchors a space designed for lingering. The restaurant offers a kaiseki-inspired menu shaped by Kyoto's deep culinary traditions and seasonal ingredients, while a separate teppanyaki counter provides a more focused, theatrical experience. The Living Pavilion also houses a library, lounge, and bar area that open onto garden views. For something quieter, in-room dining allows meals to be taken in complete privacy. The Aman Spa draws on both Japanese onsen culture and the forest setting, with treatment rooms, a thermal spring bath, and yoga and meditation spaces nestled into the landscape. Guided nature walks, ikebana workshops, calligraphy sessions, and excursions to Kyoto's temples and cultural landmarks round out the programming, connecting the resort's contemplative atmosphere to the broader cultural depth of the city.

Kyoto itself sits just minutes away, yet the density of the forest canopy and the careful orientation of every structure create a boundary that feels absolute. The ancient capital's network of temples, tea houses, geisha districts, and artisan workshops exists as a counterpoint to the property's profound quietness. What Aman Kyoto ultimately offers is not an escape from Kyoto but a deeper way into it, a place where the rhythms of the natural world slow time enough that you return to the city seeing it with renewed clarity.

What we love about this stay

You feel it before you see anything — the air shifts, that faint hinoki warmth finds you on the forest path, and by the time the low stone pavilions appear through the trees, you've already crossed some invisible threshold. This is a property that practices restraint so deliberately it becomes its own form of generosity: rough-hewn timber lying close to the earth, shoji screens turning afternoon light into something gauze-soft, suites where a single blossom stem placed with intention says more than any grand gesture could. The architecture borrows from the ridgeline rather than competing with it, and the kaiseki menus read like quiet conversations with Kyoto's seasons. It's the rare place that doesn't try to impress you — it simply returns you to a slower, more attentive version of yourself.
