What we love about this stay
Request a garden-facing room — the city views are fine, but waking to morning light filtering across tatami while maple branches frame the window is the whole point of being here. Grab one of the complimentary bicycles early and ride to Sanjusangen-do before the tour groups arrive; you'll have the thousand statues nearly to yourself. Back at the hotel, the terrace overlooking the garden is the spot worth claiming come evening — order local sake and let the staff guide you on the pour. Dinner in-house is genuinely worth one night; the plating alone tells you the kitchen takes Kyoto's kaiseki tradition seriously without being precious about it. This is a property that rewards slowing down.

If you go to Kyoto, try to stay at Genji Kyoto- it’s so beautiful and welcoming! A special experience! Genji Kyoto is a wonderful hotel. It’s in a charming, quiet neighborhood right on the Kamo River. The Zen garden and overall design is inspired by the Tales of Genji. Our room was spacious and full of light, with a balcony and a beautiful soaking tub. The rooftop garden is spectacular- we watched fish, turtles and wading birds in the river’s clear waters while we sipped cocktails. The staff were incredibly welcoming, kind and helpful. They went out of their way to help with travel plans and to make recommendations for our stay in Kyoto. I wish we could have stayed longer!

Exceptional The breakfast options and service were great. The hotel rooms were excellent and the staff was very warm and welcoming. The location is very good since it is 6-7 minutes away from the Keihan Line, which lets you get to Fushimi Inari or the Gion District conveniently.
