A former Catholic church, a rectory, a schoolhouse, and a convent stand together on a corner in the Marigny, just beyond the French Quarter, each structure carrying a different century's intention. Hotel Peter and Paul occupies all four buildings, and the experience of arriving here is the experience of stepping into a place where preservation and personality coexist without compromise. The original architectural details remain remarkably intact: vaulted ceilings in the former church nave, tall windows that still filter light through old glass, worn wooden staircases that creak with genuine history. The interiors layer vintage furnishings, custom wallpapers, and collected antiques against these inherited bones, creating rooms that feel discovered rather than designed.
The hotel's 71 rooms are spread across the four buildings, and no two are alike. Each is individually furnished with a mix of period pieces, original art, and unexpected textiles, some featuring iron bed frames, others clawfoot tubs or church pew headboards. The variation is deliberate. Rooms in the Schoolhouse tend toward brighter, more playful arrangements. Those in the Convent carry a quieter restraint. The Church building holds some of the most dramatic spaces, where the scale of the original architecture shapes the guest experience in ways a conventional hotel room never could. Throughout, the aesthetic is layered and warm without becoming theatrical.
The Sunday Best bar occupies the ground floor of the former rectory, serving cocktails in a space that feels like a well-loved neighborhood gathering point rather than a hotel lobby lounge. The Elysian Bar, set within the restored church itself, operates beneath original arched ceilings and stained glass as both a restaurant and a bar, offering a menu rooted in the culinary traditions of New Orleans. It is a destination in its own right for locals and guests alike, and the atmosphere of dining inside a deconsecrated church lends an undeniable gravity to even a casual evening drink. A courtyard connects the buildings and offers an outdoor space shaded by mature trees, a transitional zone between the hotel's interior world and the neighborhood beyond.
The Marigny is one of New Orleans' most storied residential neighborhoods, known for its Creole cottages, live music venues, and proximity to Frenchmen Street. Hotel Peter and Paul sits comfortably within this context, close enough to the energy of the city's most celebrated corridors but rooted in a quieter, more residential rhythm. The neighborhood rewards wandering, and the hotel's location places guests within walking distance of the culture, food, and nightlife that define downtown New Orleans without requiring immersion in the density of the Quarter itself.
What lingers about this property is not any single detail but the accumulation of them. The way morning light enters a former classroom. The weight of a brass key in your hand. The sound of the courtyard at dusk. Hotel Peter and Paul, an Ash Hotel, is a place where history is not curated into a theme but inhabited as a texture, and where the peculiarities of four very different buildings create something that feels less like a hotel and more like a place that has simply always been here, waiting to be occupied again.

What we love about this stay
There's something quietly profound about sleeping inside a converted 19th-century church in the Marigny — a neighborhood that already feels like New Orleans distilled to its most authentic. Hotel Peter and Paul carries its past without performing it. Original stained glass throws shifting color across rooms where historic brick walls meet bespoke furnishings, and no two spaces feel alike, which keeps the whole place from ever tipping into boutique-hotel formula. It's the kind of property where the architecture does most of the emotional work, and the design knows when to step back. The lounge draws you in after dark with a warmth that feels genuinely communal rather than curated. This is a stay that suits people who want proximity to the French Quarter but prefer to end their evening somewhere quieter, somewhere that feels earned.

The style of the hotel, all the staff were wonderful, we loved the bathroom in our room, loved the restaurant and bar, the local books and mostly local snacks in the room.

I've stayed at Peter and Paul several times. I was impressed that they have started to add more amenities such as a fridge in the rooms, much to my satisfaction as I felt they were missing items like this before. It is beautifully decorated, the staff is wonderful, it is in a very favorite locals only feeling part of New Orleans on a residential street but still a stones throw from the Quarter and Frenchman Street. Always a lovely stay, and the price is right too!
