The building at 9 Orchard Street has watched the Lower East Side reinvent itself for more than a century. Built in 1912 as the Jarmulowsky Bank, the Beaux-Arts landmark once anchored a neighborhood defined by immigrant ambition and restless commerce. Its terra-cotta façade and columned crown still command the corner of Canal and Orchard, but step inside Nine Orchard today and you encounter something altogether different: a 116-room hotel that honors the architecture's grandeur while introducing a distinctly contemporary sensibility. The restoration, led by Dutch firm MNABC and designer Sarah Levander, preserves original marble, ornamental plasterwork, and soaring proportions while layering in warm textiles, custom furnishings, and a palette that shifts between soft neutrals and deep, moody tones. The effect is neither museum nor trend piece. It feels considered, lived-in, and unmistakably rooted in this particular building.

Guest rooms range from intimate quarters to sprawling suites, many featuring large windows that frame the neighborhood's low skyline and, from the upper floors, wide views stretching toward the bridges and waterfront. Bathrooms are finished in stone and outfitted with deep soaking tubs. Throughout, the design avoids excess in favor of proportion and materiality, letting the bones of the building speak. Public spaces carry the same restraint. The lobby's restored banking hall, with its double-height ceilings and original marble floors, serves as a gathering point that still carries the weight of the room's former purpose.

Dining at Nine Orchard unfolds across several distinct settings. Corner Bar occupies the ground floor with a menu rooted in seasonal drinking and small plates, while the hotel's rooftop restaurant offers a more expansive culinary experience set against open sky and downtown views. The property also houses a subterranean bar, its atmosphere shaped by low light and the building's original vaulted ceilings. Together, these spaces create a constellation of moods that shift from morning coffee to late-night gathering without ever leaving the building.

The Lower East Side itself remains one of New York's most layered neighborhoods. Galleries, vintage shops, and some of the city's most compelling restaurants sit within a short walk. Canal Street's energy pulses just outside the entrance, and Chinatown unfolds a few steps south. Nine Orchard occupies a rare position: a hotel grand enough to anchor an evening, intimate enough to feel personal, and porous enough that the city beyond its doors remains the real draw. What stays with you is the tension the building holds so gracefully, between history and the present tense, between the monumental and the quietly domestic. It is a hotel that feels as if it has always been here, even as it reveals something new with each return.

What we love about this stay

Nine Orchard sits at a crossroads that feels genuinely Lower East Side — not the sanitized version, but the one where Canal Street's chaos and Orchard Street's gallery culture collide just outside the door. Inside, the lobby catches you off guard with its natural light and bespoke furnishings, establishing a mood that's more curated residence than corporate hotel. It's a place that understands the tension between wanting to be in the thick of New York and needing somewhere quiet to land. The rooms feel considered rather than overdone, and select terraces offer that rare thing — a private moment with the cityscape. The ground-floor bistro and upstairs cocktail lounge mirror the neighborhood's own rhythm, shifting naturally from morning to night. What lingers is the sense that someone built this for people who already know New York well enough to want something that doesn't shout.
